Reddit and TikTok Under Investigation for Children's Data Practices
Reddit and TikTok Face UK Investigation Over Child Data Privacy Concerns
The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has launched an official investigation into TikTok, Reddit, and Imgur over their handling of children’s personal data. The watchdog aims to determine whether these platforms comply with UK privacy laws designed to protect underage users.
How Social Media Algorithms Impact Children
Social media platforms use AI-driven algorithms to enhance user engagement by curating personalized content. However, these algorithms may unintentionally expose minors to harmful material, raising concerns over child safety online. The ICO's investigation will examine whether these companies have implemented adequate safeguards.
Key Focus Areas of the Investigation
- TikTok (ByteDance): Investigating how TikTok collects and uses personal data from users aged 13–17 to suggest content in their feed.
- Reddit & Imgur: Assessing the effectiveness of their age-verification systems and whether they allow minors to access content that may not be suitable for them.
“If we find sufficient evidence that any of these companies have violated UK data protection laws, we will take necessary action,” the ICO stated.
Previous Actions & Company Responses
In 2023, the ICO fined TikTok £12.7 million ($16 million) for breaching data protection laws, accusing the platform of collecting personal data from users under 13 without parental consent.
Reddit has stated that it is fully cooperating with the ICO’s investigation and plans to introduce updates aligning with UK age-assurance regulations. However, TikTok, ByteDance, and Imgur have yet to respond to the ongoing probe.
With growing scrutiny on social media companies regarding child data protection, this investigation signals stronger enforcement actions in the future.
